How to do better with gender on surveys: A guide for HCI researchers

The year was 2015 and Katta, who is nonbinary and uses they/them/their pronouns, wanted to apply as a student volunteer for CHI 2016. Excited, they began to fill in the form, but alas, they were presented with only two options: male or female. Insights Being nonbinary, though, meant that selecting either of these boxes would be both false and uncomfortable.
